Why you really want to do it? If it’s just for money… you’ll be dead in no time.
If it’s to make an impact in other’s people’s lives (for good) then you have a better chance of success.

I totally agree with the first point, I use Facebook for my friends and Google+ for “promoting” my blog (which I haven’t updated for a while, but anyway).
As for the third point, it’s important to try to build a relationship with those who admire, but not just for the sake of getting more traffic to your blog, but because you really care about that person and the work (s)he does.

Oh my gosh! This is so exciting! Thanks for the compliments on my work, Amber– I’m so thankful and so grateful for this opportunity. I promise to only use my powers for good, haha. Most definitely, that sounds like a really intriguing idea. I’m all curious now, haha. Some sort of freelance-startup guide organized into a “book” would be a really valuable resource and something I’m sure quite a few readers would find very helpful!

What to actually put in a portfolio site is tricky, something I am struggling with myself. Of course, first and formost, clients want to see your work in an easy to read and understand fashion. Next, they will want to know what you did on the project–did you design and code it or just one or the other. Finally, the more educated client will look at the technologies that you used, such as WordPress or Javascript for websites, or Illustrator and Photoshop for design. But I can dig deeper and put it all in an article. Great idea since the portfolio is your lifeline!

This is hitting more on the salesmanship side of freelancing. I took a salesmanship class and learned tons that I could sum up and put in an article or two, especially the points that I think student freelancers should pay attention to the most.

Always remember, half of success is just showing up!
